4.1. Add

The "Add" option in the materials menu allows the user to add a new material to the list. When selected, the following tab is shown:

The different options on this panel and their meaning are the following:

  • Material Attributes - Name: The user specifies the name for the new material.
  • Material Attributes - Color: The user specifies the color for the new material, used to easily recognize the material when applied to an object. For additional help about color selection for a material, consult the Appendix A.
  • Material Definition: The user can choose between creating a material defined by geometry (that is, a material defined by its physical properties) or a material defined by its reflection coefficient.

The user should click on the "Set Parameters" button in order to be able to specify the required parameters for the creation of the material. These parameters differ depending on the type of material definition selected.

When the user clicks on the "Set Parameters" button when the material is defined by geometry, the following window appears:

This window presents us with two ways to creating a geometry-defined material, as in PO module (consult the "Add" section on the "Materials Menu (PO Module)" chapter to obtain more information):

  • Constant: This means the material will have a constant permittivity (Epsilon) and a constant permeability (Mu). The user needs to specify both the real part and the imaginary part of both of these values. Common real values for these parameters are greater or equal to 1.0. A negative imaginary part means that the material will have losses, while a positive imaginary part means that the material will have gains.
  • Variable with frequency: This means the material will have different properties depending on the frequency. To define a material in this way, the user needs to select the "Variable with frequency" button and click the "Add" button below the table. This will add a row to the table in which the user has to specify the frequency (in GHz) and the corresponding values of Epsilon and Mu (each with their real part and imaginary part, in this order). The user may add all the correspondencies between frequencies and Epsilon/Mu values they wish by repeating this procedure.

Once the user is satisfied with the parameters of the new material, they need to press the "OK" button and then press the "Save" button on the tab to confirm the creation of the material.

 

On the other hand, if the user clicks on the "Set Parameters" button when the material is defined by reflection coefficient, the same window as the PO module will appear. Consult the "Add" section on the "Materials Menu (PO Module)" chapter to obtain more information about defining a material by reflection coefficient.
